Guest post featuring Architect Peter Moeck

Architect and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, Peter Moeck joins us to share his experience as a Consulting Architect for an education campus that he originally had the pleasure of contributing to more than 20 years ago.

Located at the gateway to Mount Barker in the picturesque Adelaide Hills in South Australia, Cornerstone College is a Lutheran Secondary School situated on 16 hectares. The College has undertaken ten major building developments. The most recent is the Middle Years Learning Centre. Upon completion, the College will accommodate 900 students from Years 7-12.

The substantial new building provides large clear span spaces to address the education needs of today and well into the future.

Whilst we do not know what tomorrow will bring, we do know that change is constant and the need for flexibility and adaptability must be easy to achieve. It is this very sentiment which led us to choose Fielders ARAMAX FreeSpan to complete the roofing and perforated ceiling material.

Having the ability to span long distances without the need for a forest of roof steelwork and associated framing has great merit and appeal. This same material was also used to provide an unenclosed area over the adjacent hard courts to be used by the Middle Years students.

The new two storey structure is impressive. It sits comfortably into the Adelaide Hills context as does the acclaimed 'inbarendi' building constructed in 1999. This is also a large span structure enclosing indoor recreation spaces that are used for a range of functions, whole of school gatherings and associated activities.

'Inbarendi' is lined with one of the first Fielders 'KingKlip 700' roofs. In 2000 this building received the Colorbond Award of Merit for Steel Architecture from the Australian Institute of Architects South Australian Chapter.

In both cases a mobile roll former was used on site. This delivered time efficient and cost effective outcomes. The quality and durability of the finishes and the elegant simplicity of the product form is appealing because in education environments robustness and low maintenance are key issues.

It has been very rewarding to be an integral part of the evolution of the Cornerstone College campus over the years. I am confident that the buildings will stand the test of time and continue to delight those who use the facilities for many years to come.
